The Agendas

Recently I have become incredibly interested in listening to the voice of others and their beliefs. I believe that to better this world we need to connect more to the people surrounding us and broaden our hearts. With the recent violence and ridiculous amount of hatred that is pouring into our world, I decided that I wanted to reach out to some of our readers and ask their perspective on our world. I wish I could have taken all of these girls out for a coffee date, to hear their stories and ideas over steaming cups of hot chocolate, but they’re thousands of kilometres away from me, so I contacted them via email. Here are their ideas and world views.

What do you think is the most urgent issue that needs to be rectified in our world?

On a global level, there’s a lot that needs to be resolved and I’m not sure that one particular issue is more pertinent or more valid than others. Personally, however, I’m really passionate about resolving gender-based violence at the moment because it affects people from all origins.

What do you believe is the best way that you as an individual can help the world?

I like to find what makes me really angry about our current world and pour my efforts into fixing it, I find that the things that anger me the most are the things I’m most passionate about fighting against. Also, I often have to remind myself that I can’t fix everything overnight with a wave of a magic wand; gradual and heartfelt steps will do just fine.

What are you most proud of about our current world?

From an American point of view, I’m really proud of the resistance against Donald Trump and the radical right (especially among young people, the lgbtqa+ community, women, individuals with disabilities, the 99%, and people of color). His election was an embarrassment to our country and I’m really happy to see a lot of people fighting against his archaic values and not letting his empty threats silence us, and instead unify us.

Who is someone that inspires you to make change and pursue goodness?

This is such a hard question because there are literally so many awesome people out there right now kicking ass. I would say though that I owe a lot to Frida Kahlo for inspiring me to be an unabashed bisexual Latina woman who takes shit from no one about her identity or the way she expresses her concerns or values. But a modern inspiration of mine is probably Tavi Gevinson. I’ve never heard someone articulate thoughts and issues (that everyone has and usually internalizes) as well as Tavi. I feel like this is such a powerful gift to possess because openness allows for people to relate, connect, and understand one another which is a lot of times the first step in enacting change.

What do you think is the most urgent issue that needs to be rectified in our world?

I’m strongly passionate about feminism and equality, I don’t think it’s the most urgent issue, but it definitely is the closest one to my heart. Great progress has been made in the last couple of centuries, but I think there’s still so much to be done and changed: we now need to tackle issues such as femicides (around 30 femicides has been reported here in Italy from January 2017), non-equal pay, and the normalisation of sexist remarks. For example: how many times are men, especially young boys, made fun of because they are too “feminine”, or because they’re “weak like girls”? These sexist comments come from the notion that women are weaker than men and will always be worth less than the male sex. This is an unfair belief and needs to be changed in order for our society to progress. And feminism isn’t only important to women, it is crucial to males as well as men need to feel free in expressing themselves completely without being restrained by common standards based on a patriarchal idea of society.

What do you believe is the best way that you as an individual can help the world?

I believe in the power of social media, it is at everybody’s fingertips and it can be the new generation’s way of influencing society. Social media has largely been seen as negative; older generations see it as a way of showing off a fake and constructed reality, but I think it can be a powerful way to express ideas, inspire others, and convey important messages. I personally like instagram the best, and have found so many inspirational humans expressing their point of view and their beliefs. These people have affected my reality.

What are you most proud of about our current world?

I’m proud of people and organisations who are not afraid to speak their minds and fight for what they want/need. I’ve been deeply touched by how many people have protested against the election of Donald Trump, his beliefs, and his ideas, in order to create a more inclusive and accepting world. I’m proud when I see people coming together to support their ideas and peacefully fight for what they believe is right.

Who is someone that inspires you to make change and pursue goodness?

It’s ordinary people who inspire me to pursue goodness; I’m inspired by common people like me. People who work and achieve without the spotlight are so incredible and can often have a bigger impact than celebrities or well-known activists. I also look up to Emma Watson, who has been involved in the feminist movement: her famous UN speech has been a great way to open people’s eyes on this issue. I’ve also read Gloria Steinem’s book My Life On the Road recently and I found it really interesting to read about her experiences, see how she lived her life as an independent woman, and explore how she was able to support her own ideas.

What do you think is the most urgent issue that needs to be rectified in our world?

Global warming is an urgent issue, and here’s why. It has been hypothesized by Stephen Hawking that we only have 100 years left on this planet. Yet, there are still many people out there who believe global warming is a lie. We’re not doing enough to convince people to take action. Simply teaching kids to recycle is a step, but it’s NOT enough. Saving the Earth needs to be treated like the priority that it is. There is so much life and beauty in this world, countries filled with rich culture and history, oceans that have yet to be explored and species yet to be found. It breaks my heart thinking that this could all one day disappear, and we’d have nobody to blame but ourselves.

What do you believe is the best way that you as an individual can help the world?

By simply being myself, I can make a difference. I don’t have to force my values onto anyone or get into constant arguments about right or wrong to inspire change. Instead, I take the “lead by example” method. About a year ago, I went vegan. Sure, a lot of people know that I’m vegan and it’s something I bring up every now and then, but I quickly realized in the beginning that yelling at people or making them feel bad for eating meat was the wrong way to get people to change their mindsets. Back then it felt like I wasn’t doing much to contribute to change at all, but now I know that isn’t true. Simply by just living my life as a vegan, I have noticed others around me not necessarily going vegan (though some have) but just being more conscious of their meat or dairy consumption. Red meat used to be a common meal at my house, and I now I see them eating it less and less. Change is a chain reaction, and if I had never gone vegan then I couldn’t have inspired those around me to adjust their eating habits in a way that’s not only better for the animals but extremely helpful for the environment. As an individual, I have so much power to make an impact on the world, and so do you. So do nice things for people, stay true to your values, and express your views.

What are you most proud of about our current world?

I’m really proud of the rising generations. Everywhere I look I seem to always find young, talented, and intelligent individuals. And it makes me wonder, if they have this much of a presence now, how much of an impact will they have on the world in 5, 10, or 20 years? To see young minds so woke and bursting with creativity truly does fill me with a sense of proudness. I find myself being constantly inspired the kids of now, inspired to never stop pursuing my passions and to stay true to my morals. I can’t say what exactly, but great things will be achieved, I can feel it. Our voices and ideas are now stronger than ever, and the possibilities are endless.

Who is someone that inspires you to make change and pursue goodness?

One of the most inspiring people in my life right now is not only of my best friends but also a business partner of mine. Though we’ve only been close friends for a couple of years, the times we’ve spent together have truly helped shape me into the person I am today. Our nights are filled with long conversations about life and dreams, our days are filled with adventures and unique experiences. Having a friend with ideas as crazy as mine, is really what gave me the push to take more of an initiative in my life. She’s the young woman I started a business with. We both have a love for art and fashion, and one night we spontaneously created our very own t-shirt business (@metroyal). Back then, this is something I wouldn’t have been confident enough to start on my own, but along the way and with her help I learned that I truly do have the power to create the life that I want. And this is something that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.
